ARE YOU………? [2]

Following on ARE YOU?  “It’s a long time since I saw you, Mike.” I’ve had the flu very badly,” said Mike. After tea, I asked Mike if we could continue with our conversation about being a converted Christian. He asked if I did not tell my parents about nearly being knocked by a motor car. “My father was a very strict person and I knew I would have gotten a hiding for being careless.”

Then I continued with my story about how I became a converted Christian. When I was about 19 years old, I visited my sister who lived in Cape Town at that stage. One day I decided to do mountain climbing. I put on my tennis shoes and off went to climb the face of Table Mountain. I had no ropes with me. When I reached the rock face I rested a while.

I took my time climbing the rock face. Step by step I climbed higher and higher. I made use of every ridge and every hole as best I could. At a certain stage I realized that there were no more ridges to assist me to go higher. When I looked down I realized I was too high up to jump down.

I was stuck. I felt my fingers slipping slowly and it was too high to jump. I was alone with nobody to help me down. There was nobody in the vicinity so it was of no use to shout for help. How I got down I cannot tell you. When I gained consciousness I was standing in the narrow footpath from where I started climbing.

“What would you say, Mike? Do you think it had something to do with luck or was there something more to it?” At that stage, when came home, I just thought I had a close encounter with death. Now, being older and wiser, I realize that I was granted some more time by grace of God to get to know him better.

“But how did you get a converted Christian so to speak, Johan?” Do you mind if we talk about that next time, Mike?” So be it, Johan.”
