There is meat and then there is meat!

My name is Lindsay Smit. My testimony is about God’s provision. Round about half way through 2007 things were pretty tough financially for us. We were not managing to make it through the month as far as groceries and petrol was concerned. Anyway, I had been going through the book of Matthew and got to Matthew 6: 9 -13 which is the Lord’s Prayer. Verse 11 says Give us today our daily bread. So I began asking God each day to provide our daily bread. A couple days later I read Matthew 7:25 – 34 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than, clothes? Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So, do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. This just cemented in what God had been saying to me through the Lord’s Prayer.

Well God has a sense of humour as,

soon after this we were invited to a braai one Friday and there was just no meat and no real means to get some meat. I had determined in my heart that I was going to trust God to supply what we needed, so I said, “Lord, please could you give us some meat.” Anyway Calvin came home from work that evening and in his hand he had a packet. He had helped somebody who had been battling with a problem on a computer or something like that and had spent quite some time fixing the problem. Anyway the guy wanted to bless Calvin and so he had bought him a bag of biltong, which he was excited to share with us all. I said, “Lord, I know I asked for meat, but I didn’t mean biltong, I meant meat for a braai.” Anyway, it was a lesson on being specific with God, and also a glimpse into the humour of God.

Well throughout that year and the years that have followed, God has provided for us in incredible ways so that we always seem to have what we need. We may not have excess, but we do have what we need. God has even enabled us on occasions to be a blessing to others who are in need. So, may I encourage you all to ask God to supply you needs, and trust in His Word that He will supply them, just remember to be specific when you do ask Him for things.
